AWMA and RCNA work together to improve wound education
The Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA) and the Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) have agreed to collaborate to improve standards in Australian wound care.
The AWMA has developed a set of minimum criteria for content of basic or fundamental wound education courses/modules. There are four streams of basic courses for which these criteria have been developed:
- Introduction to wound management
- Acute trauma wound management
- Ulceration of lower legs
- Pressure ulceration.
There are also three sets of criteria for advanced courses/modules - again these specify the minimum set of content to be covered when teaching these programmes. The advanced programmes are:
- Diabetic foot wound management
- Oncological wound management
- Conservative sharp debridement therapy.
When those seeking RCNA endorsement of their programmes submit their wound-related information the assessors assigned by RCNA will use the templates provided by AWMA to judge the minimum criteria being taught. If endorsement is approved, the programme will be branded with RCNA and AWMA logos.
