Saudi Arabia promotes diabetic foot careThe Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health, partnered with sponsor Smith and Nephew, launched a Diabetic Foot Academy (DFA) last week.

The DFA is an educational initiative that will support the 20 diabetic foot clinics in Saudi Arabia. Over 40 surgeons and practitioners went to Jeddah last week to hear speakers and participate in workshops.

'This first Diabetic Foot Academy (DFA) is a new educational initiative by Smith & Nephew with a focus on the advanced management of lower limb lesions in diabetic patients,' said Ms Lys Riachi, Managing Director of Smith & Nephew in the Middle East. 'We wanted to start in Saudi Arabia, the largest country in the region, with a very high prevalence of diabetes, where 1 out of 4 Saudis suffer from Diabetes Mellitus.'

Gerit D Mulder, podiatric surgeon at the University of California in San Diego, was keynote speaker and emphasised the importance of foot care and new management techniques in the field.
