Hong Kong’s first pressure ulcer prevention programme to reduce pressure ulcer prevalence
Pressure ulcers
Hong Kong has launched its first ever pressure ulcer prevention programme to train non-licenced carers in nursing homes and ultimately reduce pressure ulcer prevalence.
A group of 41 non-licenced care providers were trained in pressure ulcer prevention after having an initial skills and knowledge test. After six weeks, the care providers were assessed again and it was found that pressure ulcer prevalence dropped from 9% to 2.5%.
Although the programme increased the carers' work loads, it improved their motivation and skill, as well as developing heightened communication skills within the staff.
Additional studies will help tweak and expand further pressure ulcer prevention training in Hong Kong.
