Folic acid supplements help to heal diabetic feet
Folic acid has been found to increase nitric oxide, an important signalling mechanism for wound repair, in patients with diabetic foot complications.
A recent study has shown that taking an oral folic acid supplement reduces endothelial dysfunction in chronic diabetic foot healing. Endothelial dysfunction is usually attributed to a reduction in nitric oxide, which is caused by an increase in intravascular superoxide. Nitric oxide signals important wound repair functions, such as angiogenesis, migration and proliferation of fibroblasts, epithelial cells and endothelial cells. About 30% of patients with diabetes experience a reduction in nitric oxide, making folic acid a potentially important oral therapy.
