Foam mattresses best for pressure ulcer prevention
Pressure ulcers
A recent study has shown that pressure redistribution mattresses are more effective at preventing pressure ulcers in long-term care facilities compared to emollients, foam cleansers and nutritional supplements.
The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that while foam cleansers are the most cost-effective option as well as very helpful in preventing pressure ulcers for those with incontinence, using foam mattresses are more helpful overall in preventing stage 2-4 pressure ulcers. Foam pressure redistribution mattresses were found to decrease patients' risk of ulcers by 60% and save a mean of $115 (CAN) per patient's lifetime.
