Chinese medicine prevents diabetic foot complications
Chinese medicine has been found to be effective for treating diabetic foot ulcers, preventing amputations and increasing patients’ quality of life whether being used on its own or in conjunction with Western treatments.
The age-old use of Chinese medicine accounts for 40% of all medical treatments in China, and treatments have been formulated specifically for diabetic foot complications. Diabetic foot ulcer care is highly individualised and can include herbal formulas, acupuncture and topical treatment. These treatments prevent ulceration in the early stages, help control exudate and encourage wound healing.
In several studies, it has been found that Western wound treatments are more effective when combined with Chinese medicine. In one study using Chinese medicine and debridement, 35 out of 40 leg amputations were prevented.
The Ministry of Science and Technology of China is currently funding more clinical trials.
