<p>This paper explores the viewpoint that the traditional or Western model of care has not helped to improve the outcomes of diabetic foot ulcers. The authors suggest that an empowerment model driven by a critical emancipatory approach has great potential to shift the current paradigm, address issues faced by individuals with diabetic foot ulcers, achieve patient engagement in self-care management and improve healthcare outcomes. Healthcare professionals and wound care nurses in particular, hold a pivotal position in advocating a self-care management model that promotes autonomy and freedom, rather than simply focusing on increasing patient compliance. </p>
