Lymphoedema
Anatomy and physiology, comprehensive assessment, the appropriate treatment modalities for mild and uncomplicated oedema and palliative care are covered in depth. The teaching and learning strategies are designed to enhance the student's capacity to manage lymphoedema in the clinical setting. This is done through reflection, dialogue and rehearsal of practical skills. This module will be delivered within a framework of integrated theory and practice.

Applicants must possess a relevant professional qualification and have been in practice for at least 2 years. The student will be expected to have access to or be working in an area which offers relevant experience, sufficient to facilitate the learning outcomes specified and to demonstrate competence in the professional techniques taught in the module i.e. minimum of 3 hours a week and be agreed by line manager. End of year one - Award of Advanced Certificate or progression on BSc(Hons) route.
Assessment:
The programme is competence driven. The key vehicle for the assessment of competence is the candidate's portfolio of evidence wupported by a 3,000 word narrative, together with verification of the development of key practical skills. The module must be successfully completed to qualify for the award.
Learning Environment:
The emphasis of the programme is upon the creation of a challenging learning environment with rapid transition to a student-led approach, as this is essential to facilitate your development to an autonomous and proactive learner. Teaching strategies employed will include group work, peer group review and support, lectures and directed reading. The course is built on interactive methods to increase confidence in practical and interpersonal abilities. A key element of this course is the practice support offered by a mentor experienced in the field of lymphoedema practice. The mentor will work locally with and support the student to develop the practical skills required to attain key worker level.
Careers:
Upon gaining the Advanced Certificate creates opportunity to develop and run a Lymphoedema Service for mild and uncomplicated chronic oedema and within the palliative care setting. Most previous graduates have gone on to do this and then undertake further study to become Specialist Practitioners.
