Icelandic Wound Healing Society
The Icelandic Wound Healing Society (Samtök um sárameðferð) (SumS), was established in October 2004 in co-operation and with the assistance of the European Wound Management Association. SumS is an independent multidisciplinary society with 160 members from various healthcare professions. The association is financed by an annual members' fee and by regular sponsors from the industry.
Objectives and activities
The main objectives of SumS are to increase knowledge on wound healing and wound management among healthcare professionals in order to promote evidence-based practice in wound management in Iceland. To achieve this, SumS organises conferences and meetings twice a year. Each March there is a general meeting where organisational matters are discussed, although lectures and presentations on professional matters are also included in the programme. An annual conference or symposium is held every autumn with the aim of bringing together a panel of local and international experts, along with interested healthcare professionals.
Another objective of SumS is to promote research related to wounds, particularly with the goal of increasing the knowledge base on wounds in Iceland. To achieve this, SumS has advertised stipends for interested healthcare professionals. The council of SumS is proud to confirm that six stipends have been awarded since the establishment of the society five years ago.
Members of SumS believe that the conferences and the awards contribute to increased knowledge and co-operation between healthcare professionals to the benefit of patients with chronic wounds in Iceland.
Five members are elected to sit on the council of SumS. Council meetings are held two or three times a year and the offices are held for two years. The current members of the council of SumS are: Gudbjorg Palsdottir, president; Vilborg Hafsteinsdottir, recorder; Jona Kristjansdottir, treasurer; Mar Kristjansson, vice president; and Thorhildur Sigtryggsdottir.
