Austrian Pressure Ulcer Prevention Association
The Austrian Pressure Ulcer Prevention Association (APUPA) was founded as a non-profit organisation in 2008 by an expert group, together with interested individuals.
The association serves as a platform for debate on the prevention of pressure ulcers, in which research plays an integral role. This research will enable the establishment of a sound knowledge base that can be applied to the relevant areas of nursing practice.
Research predicts that Austria's population will continue to grow in the future. The population's demographic profile is clearly shifting towards an increase in older people, many of whom will be in need of care. At the same time, experience shows us that there is a lack of knowledge and awareness of the problem of pressure ulcers. These are some of the reasons why the founders of APUPA decided to become active in this field.
Timely and specially tailored medical and nursing measures can help keep those at risk from developing pressure ulcers. This would not only spare those affected much pain and suffering, but it would also have a substantial beneficial economic effect by reducing costs.
