The Asian Wound Healing Association is a consortium of associations with a single mission: to enhance the lives of persons with wounds.

Every two years the AWHA brings Asia together – different disciplines, cultures and nationalities, all working to improve patient outcomes. Wound care professionals from around Asia discuss the latest developments in wound care, network with new colleagues, and share their collective experiences.

In 2005, under the chairmanship of Professor Colin Song, Singapore hosted the inauguration of AWHA, and the association has since gone from strength to strength. AWHA held their second meeting in September 2009, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, under the theme of 'Open Minds - Close Wounds', with the objective of providing evidence informed information for best clinical practice. The meeting had the participation of phenomenal personalities involved in wound care from India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Japan and China and of course Sri Lanka.

At this meeting, a stimulating and edifying programme discussed problems unique to Asia, to which we need to find the solutions while learning from the rest of the world: aetiologies, ulcer size, patient perceptions, compliance, availability of products, services, affordability. The meeting provided the Asian wound healers with the opportunity to advance and update their knowledge base, presented local advances in wound care and discussed local problems in order to initiate wound healing research appropriate to our specific needs. Evidence in wound care is increasingly governing the way we manage wounds. The meeting signalled an exciting start to an era in Asian Wound Healing. With this initiative we hope many Asian nations will gain their rightful place in the wound care global sphere.

Professor Mandika Wijeyaratne is the current Chairman of the Asian Wound Healing Association. The Chair will be passed onto to a member in Thailand in 2011.

ANNUAL EVENT
The 3rd congress of the Asian Wound Healing Association will be from September 11-14, 2011 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center.
